Vienna on a small budget

Typically Vienna

  • Parks and gardens: for example the beautiful gardens of Schönbrunn Palace as well as "Burggarten" and "Volksgarten" along the Viennese Ringstrasse.
  • You don't have to go on an expensive sightseeing tour every time: just take a walk along the Viennese Ringstraße (around the old city centre) or go and discover many of the enchanting little alleyways in the first district of Vienna (inner city, old town centre) on your own initiative.
  • Enjoy the view over Vienna and Schönbrunn Palace from the Gloriette (in Schönbrunn Garden).
  • Many people say that Vienna has some kind of morbid charm: discover it yourself, for example on one of the cemeteries around the city, e.g. Central Cemetery, Hitzinger Cementery or St. Marx Cemetery.
  • Discover one of the most popular Viennese leisure- and recreation area:
    the Lainz Game Preserve – Entrance free.

Music

  • Opera live on the square – in September selected performances of the Vienna State Opera will be shown live on screen on the square in front of the Opera House. 45 minutes before the film begins and during the intermissions information will be presented about that particular work, the cast, the Vienna State Opera, and the performances. Entrance is free!
  • Vienna State Opera – Standing room for  € 3,- / € 4,- only box office the same day (at the foyer of the State Opera, Entrance Operngasse, opening 80 minutes before performance begin)
  • Original Hoch- und Deutschmeister – every Saturday from 5.05. – 6.10.2012. At 10:45 am, the military band will form at Kohlmarkt/Graben and  will continue making music while marching across the Kohlmarkt and through the Michaelertor into the Inner Courtyard. Once there, the orchestra will take up concert positions and perform for about 40 minutes. After having finished there, the musicians will again regroup and resume their musical march on their return to the Michaelerplatz, where the "Court Music" will end at 12 noon with the ringing of the midday bells - free entrance.
  • Haus der Musik (House of Music) (Seilerstätte 30, 1010 Vienna) – Happy Hour every Tuesday starting at 5pm with Museum.Music.Drinks.Shopping. 50% discount on the entrance fee.
  • Ankeruhr (Anker clock) (Hoher Markt 10/11, 1010 Vienna) – daily parade of figures with music at 12:00 (noon).

Culture

  • Free entrance in all Viennese museums for kids and youngsters until the age of 19.
  • MAK – Museum of Applied Arts/Contemporary Art (Stubenring 5, 1010 Vienna) – every Saturday 10am - 6pm free entrance for all visitors.
  • MUSA Museum Start Gallery Artothek (Felderstraße 6-8, 1010 Vienna) – during the opening hours (Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday: 11am - 6pm; Thurdsay 11am - 8pm; Saturday 11am - 4pm) Entrance free + every Thursday betwenn 5 - 6 pm free tours.

Culinary delights

  • K.u.K Hofzuckerbäckerei Demel (Kohlmarkt 14, 1010 Vienna) – pastry shop daily 10am - 7pm; Demel Museum: Monday - Sunday 11am - 6pm – Admission free.
  • The Vienna Naschmarkt – Wienzeile near Secession/Theater an der Wien, biggest and most well known market of Vienna with Viennese and international treats and trendy bars and restaurants, Monday - Friday 6am - 7:30pm, Saturday 6am - 5pm, Saturday with flee market 6:30am - 6pm.
  • Brunnenmarket & Yppenmarket, between Thalia- und Ottakringerstraße – Monday - Friday 6am - 7:30pm, Saturday 6am - 5pm. „Meeting pot of nations", one of the biggest street markets of Vienna, a lot of trendy bars and restaurants, especially remarkable "Staud's Pavillon" (synonym for classy jam and vegetable delicacies).
  • Wiener Würstelstand (Sausage stand) – everywhere in Vienna, try a "Käsekrainer"!
