City breaks and dogs don't fit - think again.
What should you know before your stay in Vienna?
- At the public transport you have to walk your dog on a lead with a muzzle.
- The big business of your dog must be disposed in a garbage bag - in many places in Vienna you can grab a black garbage bag for free (for your dog). The Viennese motto is: Take a "sackerl" (bag) for your "Gackerl" (dogs poo).
- In many districts, there are so-called "dog zones". This is a fenced-in area where your dog can run freely. It's not beautiful, but practical.
Tip 1: Use the pub gardens
It's summer so you can enjoy sitting outside – in a lot of pub gardens dogs are welcome (and you can relax in the shadow).
Tipp 2: Green Vienna
While dogs are not welcome at well-known parks (for example Schlosspark Schönbrunn), the Wienerwald (Vienna Forest) is different.
In the Wienerwald there are countless walking/hiking opportunities, which are easily to reach. Particularly beautiful are the two Viennese mountains: the Leopoldsberg and the Kahlenberg - here you'll have a wonderful view over Vienna.
Tipp 3: Go swimming
Vienna is located on the beautiful Danube, why not jump into the water with your dog? "Dog beaches" make it possible. In the 21st district between Nordbrücke and Floridsdorfer Brücke, as well as on the Old Danube near bus station 20B "Sandrockgasse" and at the "dog park at the Angelibad". Another possibility is at the bathing lake Hirschstetten (lower area, Spargelfeldstraße).
